Mislinja existed as a municipality during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until 1955, when it was merged into the larger Municipality of Slovenj Gradec. It regained independence in 1995. With an area of 112 km², Mislinja is one of the larger municipalities in Slovenia.
